nightmare. the winter weather advisory is already issued for much of our area. >> the federal government and several schools in the area are delayed tomorrow. we'll show you those on your screen in just a moment. let's go to steve who has been tracking the situation. >> it is quiet and try at our weather center. around the beltway, not much of a problem right now. to the west, you can see the moisture beginning to move our way. temperatures are critical as they move through the overnight hours. already below freezing at dulles and reagan national airport 31 in charlottesville. we will look for the colder temperatures to stick around for another few hours. take a look at our doppler radar. to the west, across the panhandle and into west the light snow and the sleep. it is just beginning to develop. this will pose a bigger problem to the north and west of d.c. was of a problem for the immediate metro area where it is dry. that will all change as we move

through the rush-hour commute. winter weather advisory will go into effect for d.c. and maryland beginning at 3:00 a.m. in the morning. the western zone, 1:00 a.m. in the morning. waking up, be prepared for some delays, freezing rain switching over to sleep and over to all rain as temperatures eventually lift above freezing. we will talk about the potential for more delays owning up in just a few minutes. and a big warm up on the way courtesy of the system. that isn't just a couple minutes. >> have to get through monday first. the other big story we are following, a tragedy that played out some 5000 miles from washington d.c. but felt like it happened in our backyard. we are talking about a fire that killed hundreds of people in santa maria, brazil. we go to the newsroom with the very latest. you spoke with some resilience in our area tonight. >> i did. they say this is shocking.

at least 233 people died. where this happened -- and this brazil pose the largest city. about 800 miles south, in the southern part of brazil is the town where this happened. that town an entire country are in shock tonight. >> as many as 2000 people were jammed into this nightclub when the fire started. there appears to have been only one exit. nearby, college students tried to help firefighters create new ways to get out. it was too late to save over 230 people. a brazilian news agency reported that the fire started after a bandit used pyrotechnics in its show. the vast majority of victims the flames, but from inhaling smoke as they struggled to escape. >> in this time of sadness, we are all together. >> the president said it is a tragedy for the whole country. resilient americans are morning to -- mourning too.

out of brazil that the band that did the pyrotechnic show that is believed to start the fire could be looking at manslaughter charges essentially. one member of the band did die. the rest of the members made it out ok. live in the newsroom, abc 7 news. >> the details of this fire are eerily similar to the deadly nightclub fire in rhode island in 2003 that claimed 100 lives. more than 200 people were hurt in that fire, set off by pyrotechnics. alarms were sounded and there were four possible exits but most of the crowd headed for the front door. irina memorial, the governor of rhode island declared a moratorium on pyrotechnics. >> we are following developing news. the police have arrested three people in connection with a murder in glen burnie. they have charged eric banks with. his daughter erica and jermaine calhoun are being excused of

accessories. the victim was shot and stabbed. erica banks and the victim knew each other. thanks -- banks, her father and calhoun were at the scene when police arrived. >> abc 7's jake joins us live from the satellite center. >> 63-year-old mira's unsolved murder has a family searching for hope and justice. >> i can understand it. >> why anyone would hurt her. >> she was my best friend. we would do things together. it is something that can never be filled.

>> they gathered sunday night and a glen burnie parking lot to mark two years since the retired schoolteacher was murdered only steps from this memorial. >> formate, -- for me, i cannot hate something i do not know who or what to hate. except the act. it was so vicious. >> she was found shot multiple times inside her car on a snowy morning in january 2011. the 63-year-old with no arrest record may have been the victim of a robbery. nobody knows for sure. know what has been arrested. >> she was definitely daft -- she was with me my whole life. my best friend. >> they returned to the parking lot to honor her and remind the community that justice is possible. >> authorities are actively

working this case. if you have any information, you are urged to contact authorities. abc 7 news. >> thank you for the update. a former maryland delegate has passed away days after she was rescued from a fire in her home. christine jones was not breathing when fire crews arrived on thursday. they performed cpr and took her to the hospital. the 83-year-old died last night. investigators know the fire started in a first-floor bedroom, but not exactly sure how. >> and emotional tethering at gallaudet university -- gathering at gallaudet university. laura snyder-gardner died last wednesday and fire. and her daughter marianne was an athlete at this goal. they both will be terribly missed. >> i want to honor the memory of these two individuals. it is a reflection of their

hearts. they have really reached out to help others. >> investigators have not determined the cause for last week's fires. her daughter was 16. scalia debt is starting a scholarship fund in names. you can find the winks -- dahlia debt -- dahlia debt university is starting fund in their names. you can find the links on our website. >> a fire in a best western, started in a laundry room. nobody was hurt. guests were allowed to return. >> a search for a gunman that robbed a 711 in silver spring. this was around 9:00 p.m. tonight on georgia avenue. montgomery county police say the suspect took off. nobody was physically hurt. two university of maryland students became victims in separate incidents today. police say someone tried to rob one student living in an off-

campus apartment in the 81 hundred block of baltimore avenue. the victim suffered, the suspect ran away without taking anything. hours earlier another student was held up in the 7400 block. they have suspects in that case. all three are from riverdale. >> gun violence is as much a public health threat as house fires. that is the view of a dr. and researcher who has written extensively on gun violence. he spoke at st. john's church this morning. he wants commonsense solutions to reduce gun violence. extremists on both side of the gun gun debate need to compromise. >> we are allowed responsible gun ownership for responsible individuals. it acts ahead of time to prevent 911 calls.

representing the people of his constant. >> cnn is reporting a secret service dog fell to its death while doing a security suite -- suite read it was near the ritz carlton hotel where joe biden was speaking. the dog fell from six stories. a secret service spokesperson calls the death a tragic accident. we learn more tonight from the investigation into the wings troubled dreamliner. -- boeing's troubled dreamliner. it was delivered to japan airlines less than three weeks before the fire. it arrived on december 20 and had only recorded 22 flights when fire erupted in one of its two lithium batteries. a second battery incident led to in emergency landing in japan on january 16. the seven date seven fleet -- 787 fleet has been grounded worldwide. >> traffic close because of an

oil leak. earlier today at least two barges -- one with carrying 80,000 gallons of crude oil. investigators do not know yet how much has spilled into the river. an eight mile stretch of the river is still closed. gas prices are going up again. the average price is up two cents over the past week. the average price for regular is $3.34 a gallon. the lowest price in the country is two dollars 88 a gallon. los angeles has the highest at three dollars 71 a gallon. -- $3.71 a gallon. >> the biggest problem is the slick roadways and sidewalks. not an ice storm. a lot of power outages increased trashing -- trees crashing. not that. it is dry around the beltway

right now. our temperatures just at freezing. 32 degrees. this is critical as we move through the next few hours. windchill factor is not as much of a problem. it feels like 25. high today was 38 degrees. average was 44. record was 75, had back in 1974. 29 degrees is the current temperature on potomac. anything falling from the sky will be frozen until temperatures make it above freezing. 29 degrees in fairfax. 31 degrees and washington d.c. temperatures across the board just hovering below the freezing line or at it. southern maryland at 31. there is a push of a milder air. it will take a bit of time to move in. it is not going to happen until midmorning tomorrow. by about 10:00 a.m. or 11:00

a.m., all the freezing rain and sleet will switch over to a cold rain as temperatures make it into the middle 40's. this is the system we are watching. part of a warm front as it marches its way toward the north and east. it will lift above us and look for warmer temperatures. they will not arrive until tuesday. by wednesday, it will feel a lot like april around here with daytime highs well into the upper 50's if not around 60 degrees. doppler radar, western maryland in cumberland -- a little bit of sleet. not going to amount to a whole lot right now. we are going to look at the potential of a light lazing -- glazing early tomorrow morning. the roads have been well treated. let's see what we have in terms of a winter weather advisory -- for the district, it goes into effect at 3:00 a.m. chicago, pittsburgh, you could run into some travel delays you the wintry weather.

here is our futurecast. pay attention to the timeline here. areas shaded in pink -- looking at the best chances for that light glazing. by tuesday, back into the 50's for daytime highs. nighttime lows, 27-33 degrees. daytime highs tomorrow will be in the middle 40's. rain and sleet changing to all rain. the extended outlook shows highs near 60 degrees on wednesday. we could be looking at the potential for a few severe thunderstorms, gusty winds and some heavier rain. >> weather advisory goes into effect at 3:00 a.m.. >> it is gradual. it is not going to be a lot of ice. just a little bit. it does not take a lot to cause problems. >> there were no problems on the ice today. >> no. everyone was in panic mode, but smiles today.
